Free Online 12 programme Prime Time for Older Adults 50-80 years

The ‘Prime Time for Older Adults’ was a pilot project delivered in 2020 to build on the existing skillset of fitness professionals in Laois so that they have the skills and knowledge to

  • Design, implement and evaluate an evidence-based strength and conditioning intervention for older adults and
  • Teach older adults the skills and knowledge they need to empower them to increase their functional strength and fitness for activities of daily living and manage and improve clinical conditions they may have including arthritis, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

The overall goal of this project was to create more opportunities for older adults in Laois to be physically active under the supervision of skilled professionals that are equipped to deliver group physical activity sessions for this population, particularly in relation to the clinical conditions that often exist in this group. This programme received funding from the Government of Ireland’s Sláintecare Integration Fund under grant agreement number 21. 

The Slaintecare Integration Fund has been extended in 2021 to enable the project to continue and provide more opportunities to participate in physical activities for older adults.  The next programme will commence on the 15th March.  Caroline Myers, Co-ordinator Laois Sports Partnership stated “Based on the success of our pilot programme in 2020 we are delighted to receive additional funding and be in a position to roll out more programmes to support Older Adults in our County.  This programme is invaluable as it not only increases people’s physical activity levels which is monitored by our experts but also in terms of connecting people who may feel lonely or isolated whilst staying apart. It gives people something to look forward to having a weekly routine to help them get through lockdown and promote positive health and wellbeing”.
