Laois Girl in First Powerchair Football World Cup

Aoife McNicoll who attends Scoil Chriostri, Portlaoise will represent Ireland at the first ever Powerchair Football World Cup which is being held in Paris this November 2nd to 6th. Aoife who plays with Midlands United is a 5th year student and has been playing since she was 9 years of age. At only 16, Aoife is the youngest member of the World Cup panel. Three Midlands United powerchair football players will represent Ireland in the World Cup 2011. On January 22nd last, 20 selected players from various clubs in Ireland gathered to participate in an intense day of trials for the Irish team. A panel of 8 were chosen by the Irish management team and club coaches to compete in the World Cup. This is a magnificent achievement for the Midlands club and especially for those selected players, namely; Aoife (Laois), Emmett Daly (Offaly) and Dani Weldon (Westmeath). Midlands United was formally established under the Sport Inclusion Disability Officer programme. They won the AIPF (Association of Irish Powerchair Football) National league and cup title in 2009 and received the runners-up title in 2010. This season, they once again received the runners-up title in the National league and reached the semi-finals in the National cup that took place on the 18th of June. Laois Sports Partnership would like to wish Aoife, her teammates and all her travelling supporters every success in World Cup. Bring back Gold!
