The Department operates two grant programmes: The 2006 Sports Capital Programme and the Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme. (A) The 2006 Sports Capital Programme. The National Lottery-funded Sports Capital Programme provides funding to voluntary sporting and community organisations at local, regional and national level throughout the country towards the provision of sport and recreational facilities. Applications were recently invited by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism under the National Lottery funded Sports Capital Programme in respect of the round of grants for the year 2006. Proposals for the development of sport and recreational facilities were eligible for funding under the Programme with special priority given to the development of facilities in disadvantaged areas in line with Government policy aimed at increasing participation in sport and recreation in those areas. Under the Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme (2000-2002) the Government has provided for a total of £45m in funding. Grants of up to £3m are available towards both the refurbishment of existing pools and the provision of new pools subject in both cases to the total grant not exceeding 80% of the eligible cost of the project or, in the case of projects located in designated disadvantaged areas, 90% of the eligible costs. These revised grant levels will operate to the end of the current three-year programme in 2002. The Department will be in touch with each Local Authority if the swimming pool programme is being re-opened, as applications are not being accepted at present under this programme. The last date for accepting proposals under the present programme was 31/07/2002 and there are 46 applications for refurbishment, replacement and new pool proposals still being processed under this scheme.
