Laois Sports Partnership awards 24,000 in grants |

On Thursday May 29th in the Council Chambers, County Hall, Portlaoise, representatives of 42 clubs, schools and community groups were presented with cheques totalling €24,000 under the Sport & Physical Activity Grant Scheme 2003. The grants were awarded to groups from all corners of the county for the promotion of sport and physical activity within their communities. Opening the function, Mr. Martin Cashen (Garda Siochána) Chairman of Laois Sports Partnership thanked all those in attendance for their applications. He said that the promotion of social inclusion was one of the main themes of the grants and he asked that the groups always keep in mind those who could be helped through participating in sport and recreation. Mr. Thos Mc Dermott, Sports Partnership Co-ordinator, commended the groups for the level of quality and innovation which was present in the applications. He said the awarding of local grants is a central element in the Sports Partnership plans alongside the promotion of information seminars, the provision of more and better facilities and the organisation of activities for specific target groups such as schoolchildren and older aged groups. Representatives of groups which had received grants in 2002 then outlined how they had used the grants to purchase equipment, train leaders or carry out sports programmes and how it had benefited their communities. In many instances the grants helped to get a programme of activities up and running and these are now well established. After the allocation of the grants by board members Ms. Ciara Farrell (County Development Board) and Ms. Teresa Mc Evoy (VEC) some of the groups then described to the audience what they planned to do with the money received. The evening ended up with some light refreshments and all present agreed that the money granted will definitely help them to carry out their plans.
